SkyBlock Mining Guide: HOTM, Powder, and Where the Coins Are
How to progress the Heart of the Mountain, farm powder efficiently, and turn Hypixel SkyBlock mining into real income through gemstones and Crystal Hollows.
SkyBlock Mining Guide: HOTM, Powder, and Where the Coins Are
Mining is the slow burn of SkyBlock progression. It starts boring and low-paying, and then somewhere around the Crystal Hollows it quietly becomes one of the better income sources in the game. The thing that gets you there is the Heart of the Mountain, and almost everyone underestimates how much it changes things.
This guide is about getting through the slow part efficiently and reaching the part where mining actually pays.
The Heart of the Mountain, in plain terms
The HOTM is mining's version of a skill tree. You level it by earning Mithril Powder and Gemstone Powder while you mine, and you spend that powder unlocking perks: faster mining speed, better drops, abilities that break huge chunks of ore at once, and passive bonuses that compound over time.
The key insight is that the tree pays for itself. Early perks make you mine faster, which earns powder faster, which unlocks more perks. The grind feels slow at first because you haven't unlocked the things that make it fast yet. Push through the early tiers and the curve bends in your favor.
Powder, the real currency
Coins matter, but powder is what gates your mining progression, and it comes in two flavors:
- Mithril Powder for the earlier perks and the Dwarven Mines content.
- Gemstone Powder for the later perks and the Crystal Hollows content.
The fastest way to bank powder is to mine where the powder events and commissions are happening, lean into double-powder events when they're up, and not skip your daily commissions. Commissions are free powder and coins for doing things you'd be mining anyway. Skipping them is leaving progression on the table.
Where the money actually is
Gemstone mining in the Crystal Hollows
This is the payday. With a Gemstone Gauntlet and a decent HOTM setup, you mine Jade, Ruby, Amber, Sapphire, Amethyst, Topaz, and Jasper, and the rough gemstones sell consistently on the Bazaar Tracker. The income is steady because gemstones are always in demand for crafts and upgrades, so you're rarely stuck holding something nobody wants.
Crafting up before selling
Rough gemstones can be crafted into flawed, fine, flawless, and perfect tiers, and the higher tiers are sometimes worth more per unit than selling rough. Run your gemstones through the Craft Engine to see whether crafting up beats selling raw at current prices. It often does, and it's free margin on mining you're already doing.
Powder-to-coins perks
Some HOTM perks and abilities effectively convert your mining time into more valuable drops. Prioritizing the perks that boost gemstone yield turns the same hours into more coins, which is the whole compounding loop again.
A rough progression path
- Early: Grind Mithril in the Dwarven Mines, do every commission, and dump powder into mining speed and the first ability. It feels slow. It's supposed to.
- Mid: Once you can mine Mithril comfortably, push toward the Crystal Hollows access and start banking Gemstone Powder.
- Late: Run gemstone mining with a Gauntlet, prioritize gemstone-yield perks, and start crafting your output up before selling.
- Endgame: Max the tree, chase the rare perks, and treat gemstone mining as a reliable several-million-an-hour income whenever you want it.
Gear priorities
You don't need the best pickaxe to start, but a few things matter in order:
- Mining speed first, because everything downstream depends on breaking ore faster.
- A Gemstone Gauntlet once you're in the Hollows, because it's the tool that unlocks gemstone income.
- HOTM perks over flashy gear early. The tree does more for your hourly rate than most equipment upgrades.
Check where your mining progression sits by pulling your profile up in the Profile lookup, and compare your gemstone income potential against other money methods in the money-making methods ranking.
Common mistakes
- Quitting during the slow early grind. The income curve is back-loaded. The first few HOTM tiers are an investment, not the payoff.
- Skipping commissions. They're free powder and coins for normal mining. Do them every day.
- Selling all gemstones raw without checking. Crafting up is frequently better. Let the Craft Engine decide.
- Ignoring powder events. Double-powder windows are when you should be mining hardest. They roughly double your progression for the same effort.
A quick FAQ
Is mining good money? Early, no. After the Crystal Hollows with a decent HOTM, yes, reliably several million an hour with the right setup.
What's more important, the pickaxe or the HOTM tree? The tree, especially early. Mining speed and the right perks change your hourly rate more than a marginal pickaxe upgrade.
Should I sell gemstones rough or crafted? Check the Craft Engine. Crafting up to higher tiers is often worth more per unit, but it depends on current prices.
Mining rewards patience more than any other skill. Grind through the slow early HOTM tiers, get to gemstone mining, and check the bazaar and Craft Engine to squeeze the most out of every gem you pull. The compounding is real once it gets going.
